Healthy Chocolate?

January 31, 2008 By: Debo Hobo Category: Health Comments Off

Valentine's Day is upon us and with it hopefully comes all the yummy chocolate treats. I don't want to be distracted from my goal and Iam sure you don't either. I went online and entered 'healthy chocolate' in the search engine.

I found the Healthy Chocolate Lifestyle. According to the site their chocolate which is the Xoçai™ Omega Bar™ has a minimum of 200mg of DHA and EPA per 34-gram bar. It is an excellent source of Omega-3 and promotes the necessary balance of essential fatty acids through the Açaí Berry, flaxseed and a patented, plant-based, encapsulated Omega-3.

These dark chocolate wonders have the essence of orange, and the power of Omega 3! The Xocai Omega Bars provide your body with the essential fatty acids for preventative and better health during every stage of your life! Also, with over 8,840 ORAC you will be getting HUGE levels of antioxidants in every chocolate bar.

Sounds like it may be worth a try.

Carb Queen

January 31, 2008 By: Jessie Category: Health No Comments →

I keep changing the name of my blog.

First it was "This Time I'll Get It Right," which referred to my desire to get the weight off and keep it off once and for all. Someday I might blog about the trials and tribulations of keeping my weight off; it's not a unique story, so I'm not eager to post it.

Then I changed my blog's name to "Fat Is Not A Character Flaw (Oh, Yeah?)," which came from something I once said to Zaphod. The "Oh, Yeah?" was my weak attempt at irony. After that I dropped the "Oh, Yeah?" because it seemed a little too precious and shortened the name to "Fat Is Not A Character Flaw." I still think that's a good name for a blog, but it might not be the best name for my blog.

Now my blog is called "Carb Queen."

It's "Carb Queen" because I'm really, really missing grains. I have long referred to myself as a carb queen. Various doctors have taken it as a symptom of my (pick one) depression, toxicity, or weakness.

I suppose a more accurate title for myself would be "Starch Queen" because I love grains and starchy veggies, like potatoes & sweet potatoes.

The Detoxx Diet is why I'm suffering without my starches. Is it working? Too soon to tell.

Huh? Where did January go?

January 31, 2008 By: Heather Category: Health Comments Off

Somehow it seems like the holidays were just yesterday. How could we be on the cusp of the longest (despite being the shortest) month of the year? I guess I am getting old because more and more it seems like I think about how fast time is moving. Maybe its the realization that its something I have no control over and you know, I likes me some control! Gman and I were looking through some old pictures and video the other night and its hard to believe how much the kids have grown and changed in such a short time. My babies are slipping away and becoming real, honest to goodness people. Boobah summed up it well the other day when she said "Mommy, don't you think I just look like a little grown up?" Yes Boobah, yes you do.

I had such grand plans for getting organized in the new year, it hasn't exactly happened yet and the steps we have taken aren't as well maintained as I've liked. I guess we add that to the February list.

The exercise program is rocking. I am loving the tri training class despite the hard work and excruciatingly early hour for swimming. I graduated from the "learning to love the water" lane this morning which felt like a huge accomplishment--even moreso when I realized that not only could I keep up with them, I could pass many of them.

Day 25-Pockets of Time

January 31, 2008 By: sauchagirl Category: Health Comments Off

So, call me genius but I have figured it all out.

It is all about Pockets of time. Especially when you have three little one (or any little ones).

For no reason at all (no excuse), I just didn't get out of bed to do my workout this morning.

Hubster works at Ski Roundtop on Wednesdays and Fridays as a lift operator for the perks. He gets home between 10:30 and 11 at night. At 5 this morning, I just wanted to snuggle and be warm. I was wide awake, I just didn't want to get out of bed.

I had about 45 minutes between preschool drop off and when my friend brought her son over for me to watch. I ran up, got changed, and ran down and did my workout. Great workout too.

I'm so happy that I am figuring out how to fit fitness into my life. It makes me feel so proud and so good. My body feels so good.

I have ALWAYS wanted to be a runner. Fear of failure or not being good at something has kept me from doing a lot of things in my life. I am finally figuring out that being good is all relative. I may not be the best but I'm out there doing it and that is my best!

Have a great day!

Another night of fun

Anne’s Ratatouille Recipe for Eating Healthy Nutritious Food with the URI FEAST

January 31, 2008 By: Merry K. Category: Personal, Weight Loss No Comments →

Here's a great winter recipe from Anne http://www.cookingwithanne.blogspot.com/
She's famous in her own rite...as you'll see from all the folks who love her site. The recipe is very simple and is a nutritious delight!

Below, Anne provides a few tips before preparing and cooking your
Ratatouille:

The ingredients are as straightforward as the cooking method, but I'd like to add a few pointers.
Zucchini can be bitter and there's no real way to know ahead of time if it will be or not, but, in general, the smaller and shinier zucchini tend to be OK as well as commercially grown zucchini that have been grown under controlled conditions. Eggplant can also be bitter and smaller, shinier fruits are the best bet here, too. If the eggplant is still bitter, cube it and toss into a colander. Salt it liberally and let sit for an hour or two to drain. Press it well with a towel to remove excess liquid before cooking.

This is my recipe for ratatouille and we like it very much at room temperature with a baguette or served with a simple sautéed chicken breast.

Ratatouille:
1 medium onion, peeled and diced
1 clove garlic, minced
3 T olive oil
1 small eggplant cubed
1 medium zucchini cubed
1 medium green pepper seeded and diced
2 large tomatoes, peeled, seeded and chopped
1 t each
fresh basil and oregano, minced
1 t salt
1 T parsley chopped
1/3 c Parmesan cheese, freshly grated

In a large skillet cook onion and garlic in olive oil until onion is translucent.Add remaining ingredients except cheese and herbs and stir well. Cook on low, stirring once in awhile, about 30 minutes until tender and liquid has evaporated.Remove from heat and stir in cheese. Serve warm or cold or anywhere in between.

Here at "
Eating Healthy Nutritious Food with the URI FEAST", I want you to be encouraged to move forward with your goals of getting and staying healthy. You'll see as you look over some of my previous posts that I believe in true whole food nutrition. If you are having trouble staying on track with your goals for healthy living, there is a multitude of help to be found...not just here on my blog but also within the links that I've provided on the left side of the site.

And if you're asking yourself..."What in the world is the URI FEAST?", simply go over to the link for it on the left and give it a look.

Till next post,
Merry K.

Wednesday Weigh-In: 1/30/08

January 31, 2008 By: Michelle Category: Personal, Weight Loss No Comments →

Today I weighed in at 290.0; a loss of 3.5lbs. I do apologize for not catching up on people's blogs lately; things have been pretty busy at work and in my social life around here.

The FANTASTIC
I lost 3.5lbs this week.
I am wearing makeup almost every day.
My cold's gone!

The Good
I am going out and having a blast these days. I am barely home these days - I actually schedule home time.
Matt pushed me really hard this week and I succeeded big time.

The Bad
I missed three days of gym.
I ate out a lot (but obviously I didn't do THAT bad...)
Friends may be leaving work. :(
I got a blister last night while walking around and it broke open - ouch!

The Ugly
I drank twice this week instead of just once.
Work is nuts right now. If I have to go to the 7th floor any more times this week, I'll shoot myself (not literally).

Success story: A doctor’s opinion of seabuckthorn and the Demodex mite

January 31, 2008 By: Natalie Anne Lanoville Category: Health Comments Off

Dr E.G., at the top of our More Testimonials page, has a very strong opinion of how to treat rosacea, and the role of the Demodex mite! … For me (my complexion is pretty good, by the way) the oils tone the skin and seem to diminish excess oily secretions.  So if it is true that [...]

Numbers are not enough for real weight loss

January 31, 2008 By: Steve Category: Health Comments Off

When it comes to weight loss goals sometimes numbers just aren’t enough. We all have an ideal weight or waist size that we would like to be. Weather its 165 lbs or a 28 inch waist.

The problem that I see is that target goal doesn’t provide enough motivation on it’s own to help you achieve it. Numbers are numbers and nothing more. We attach so much extra meaning to a number. Often a specific weight, (165lbs for example) we might think that “If I can get down to that weight then I’ll be happy” or “People will treat me better if I could just get down to my goal weight”. Obviously these statements rarely ring true and don’t provide the kind of motivation that will produce the results.

So when I set a weight loss goal I attach a challenge to it. Either a fitness challenge that I need to hit or an outfit that I need to fit into and look good in. I put more importance on these than I do the numbers on the scale.

Another important part of reaching your goal is to have an appealing reward for achieving it. You can reward yourself with a new outfit, a trip, cash or anything else that that you really want.

Remember to be hard on yourself. If you don’t hit that goal you don’t get the reward (unless you are really, really close). There needs to be consequences for not putting in the effort needed to reach that goal. That’s also why setting a realistic goal is very important. If you know there is no way that you can reach a target goal, then you’ll never be able to reward yourself.

For example:

I wanted to lose 12 pounds to get down to a nice even weight. I attached the challenge of running a 5 k race in under 26 minutes to this goal. There was a race approx 6 weeks away and I signed up for it as soon as I set that goal. I found it very effective to commit to the race right away, so that I didn’t have time to talk myself out of it later on. My reward would be a nice new shirt, new pants and an evening out with my wife. A worthy reward in my eyes ?

Having my weight goal, challenge and reward in place I could now focus on what I needed to do to achieve them. Cutting calories, increasing the intensity and frequency of my workouts, and always keeping that image of race day in my mind.

The results:

I ran that race in 25:53 minutes and lost 14 pounds. Along with enjoying the reward I also enjoyed the satisfaction of finishing something that set out for myself. Something that I’ve always had a difficult time doing.

My point is that the numbers by themselves are not good motivators. I didn’t start seeing results on the scale until I stopped focusing on the scale.

Out of the blue

January 31, 2008 By: sauchagirl Category: Health Comments Off

I don't know where it came from.

Just out of the blue.

I just got a craving for a Pepsi. Weird!

I'm not a huge soda drinker. I can't remember the last time I had a real soda and not a diet.

I'm just sitting here reading Josha's archives and boom it hit me!

Crazy.

Anyway, I had a real rough nights sleep last night. My legs were so sore. Every time I moved I was in pain. Needless to say I didn't get out of bed for my upper body workout. I would have done it today except I really want Hubster's help. When he helps me work my upper body, I get a killer workout. So I'm going to do some push ups tonight and then make up my workout on Saturday morning before my planned cardio session.

Hope everyone had a great day!

Late Night Snacking

January 30, 2008 By: Diana Young, RD, LD, CDE Category: Health Comments Off

Many people think eating late at night causes weight gain. Actually, it’s not when you eat that matters, it’s what and how much you eat.

Fueling the body is a matter of timing. The longer you wait between meals, the more you tend to eat at the next meal. Three to four hours between meals is about the right amount of time to keep blood sugar levels in control.

Plan snacks with small portions in mind. Crackers and low fat cheese, yogurt and fruit, cereal and milk or peanut butter and apple slices are good options. Eating snacks with both carbohydrate and protein helps the body stay fueled.

If weight loss is your goal, space meals and snacks three to four hours apart, no matter what time of day, and watch portion sizes.
